AM21-21: Challenges and Triumphs from the Implementation of Major Donor Eligibility Changes during a Global Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges to meet blood supply demands, thus resulting in significant blood shortages. As a means to mitigate shortages, the FDA released revised guidance for HIV, malaria, and vCJD that contained numerous recommendations for changes in donor deferral. These recommendations required the development and release of the Donor History Questionnaire (DHQ) v2.1. Even under normal circumstances, implementation of major donor deferral changes requires significant time and resources. This was exacerbated by the pandemic. In this session, the AABB Donor History Task Force and others will present the following:

  • An overview of resources to aid in implementation of the Donor History Questionnaire (DHQ)
  • Data collected through surveys and focus groups detailing challenges and successes in implementing the DHQ v2.1 during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • First-hand experience from a blood center in overcoming challenges and finding opportunities during the pandemic
